Ecotourism activities
Indigenous people and cultures, Acadian history and modern entertainment, the virgin coast of the Gaspe and our healthy environment awaits you. Come discover or rediscover the Bay of Chaleur.
Jacques Cartier gave it the name Bay of Chaleur. Still today, the summers are hot, the sky is a brilliant blue and the water is temperate in the month of July and August. This warm bay is so beautiful, exceptional and warm as the people that inhabit the banks.
The picturesque mountains and the rugged chain of the Appalachians surround the Bay of Chaleur with their powerful arms. On the hills grow rich forests of various species of conifers, of which the majestic white pine dominate the banks of the bay like sentry. Birch, poplar, maple and sumac are also growing here. In autumn, when the leaves change colour, the hills become a spectacular coat of red, and yellow on a background of green spruce and fir.
The majestic moose often offers a show for motorists, but the outdoor enthusiasts may also catch sight of White-tailed deer and bear, also that of fox, marten and coyotes.
If you appreciate nature, you will no doubt be interested by the numerous species of shore birds and migrating birds, like the gannet that dives in a spectacular fashion in the search of fish and the flying of the Arctic terns, the ducks and geese. Open an eye and you may see an osprey diving for fish, the Saint-Martin buzzard and other species of hawks, along with the great blue heron and the grey heron. The boreal forest and the conifers of the region also serve as a habitat for falcon, barred owl, the minuscule little owl, grouse and white headed eagle.
Designated world heritage site of UNESCO, the Miguasha Park protects the remains of a history dating back to more than 365 million years. We find in the park exhibitions of fossils and it is possible to access the cliffs, or one can see remnants of prehistoric plants and creatures.
The Bay of Chaleur resembles an immense postal card, enamelled from one end to the other with steep hills, rugged coastline and hundreds of shorebirds. Rising from the waters a gigantic stone ship, the Perce Rock is one unique natural attraction of its kind in Bay of Chaleur.
You find at the Bay of Chaleur modern entertainment of first quality, whether you are looking for outdoor activities or a thalassotherapy centre. Cycle our paths in the wilderness, climb along our steep cliffs and canoe or kayak on our clear quiet waters.
